Racing commission OKs $400,000 in research grants

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission on Tuesday approved about $400,000 in equine research grants over the next two years.

The six research projects are the first funded by the state in a decade, said Dr. Jerry Yon, chairman of the Equine Drug Research Council, which recommended the six projects on a wide range of subjects from the herpes virus to medication regulation.

In other action, the racing commission issued a six-day riding suspension this month to jockey Calvin Borel, doubling the original penalty, after Borel dropped what was seen as a frivolous appeal of a citation for interference on Nov. 21.
