Aldi opening second store in Lexington

Lexington will soon have a second Aldi Food Market. NAI Isaac Commercial Properties announced Thursday that the grocer will open at 3695 Nicholasville Road on a portion of the former Man o' War Ford property in front of the newest expansion of Fayette Mall. Man o' War Ford moved farther down Nicholasville Road.

Construction on the Aldi location, to be 18,800 square feet, will start this month, and the opening is tentatively scheduled for August.

The first Aldi grocery in Lexington opened in north Lexington at Colesbury Circle and New Circle Road in 2007.

Aldi specializes in a limited assortment of products, including frozen meat, fresh produce and bakery items. The stores employ distinctive features such as charging a shopping cart "rental fee" of a quarter, which is returned when the cart is turned in. Customers also can choose to bring their own bags or pay for them.

The chain operates more than 1,000 stores in 29 states and has stores in Europe and Australia.
