Insight Communications, cable provider for Lexington and other parts of Kentucky, has hired journalist Ryan Alessi to help it launch a cable television channel focusing on the Bluegrass State.
Alessi, who has worked as a reporter for the Lexington Herald-Leader since 2003, will build the channel's news and public affairs operations "from the ground up," said Insight spokesman Jason Keller.
To be located on channel 2, it will launch in April with all-day local weather coverage. The station will begin to add news and public affairs shows either later this year or early next.
Alessi covered state government from his hiring at the newspaper in 2003 until November 2008. Since then, he has covered higher education.
"It's going to provide Kentuckians with another source of analysis and in-depth journalism of state politics, policy and government," Alessi said.
He said that as of now, the channel's public affairs programming is "a blank slate."
"The first commitment is going to be to doing the quality journalism that has traditionally been associated with newspapers," he said. "We're just going to bring it to TV."
