Planned power plant gets air-quality OK

A state agency has issued the final proposed air-emissions permit for a plant in Perry County that would burn wood to generate electricity.

The Kentucky Division of Air Quality issued the permit this week. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency still must give its OK.

EcoPower Generation LLC, headquartered in Lexington, wants to build the plant on a 125-acre site in an industrial park north of Hazard.

The facility would burn low-grade logs and wood waste to generate electricity. It would be a merchant plant, selling power on the wholesale market to other distributors, rather than directly to homes.

The plant, which would employ 40 people when completed, would produce enough electricity to power 30,000 homes, a company official has said.
