Retail food prices in supermarkets across Kentucky fell 1.6 percent during the first quarter compared with the fourth quarter of 2009, according to data prepared by the Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation.
The basket of 40 basic grocery items cost $103.62, down $1.66. The federation said that 27 of the items actually saw minor price increases, but the overall basket price dropped because of major dips in prices of the remaining items. Products in the beef category saw the largest price drop at 9.5 percent while fruits and vegetables saw the highest price increase at 6.3 percent.
On average, a farmer's share of a dollar spent at retail is 19 cents.
