The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission on Tuesday unanimously approved Turfway Park's request to eliminate its Kentucky Cup Day of Champions stakes card and to cut four race days for its 2010 schedule.
Citing ongoing struggles with declining purses and smaller fields, Turfway Park president Bob Elliston initially made the request for the date cuts earlier this month. While Elliston said he hopes the shorter race week will result in a more competitive product, he added the lack of stakes races and slots-fueled purses still makes it difficult for the Florence track to successfully compete with neighboring racing states.
"I wish I could say (our program) is competitive to Indiana and Pennsylvania and West Virginia, but it's not there. The horsemen will tell you that. We're trying to work on things. This is something we're not excited about doing."
