Local businesses band together to lure holiday shoppers

Though many didn't offer the kind of door-buster Black Friday deals for which national chains are known, Lexington's local retailers and companies have banded together to offer a special incentive to residents spending during the holidays.

Members of the Local First Lexington business advocacy group will give a $500 gift card to one area resident who spends money at 10 LFL member businesses through Jan. 9, said Christin Helmuth, the organization's administrator.

The spending isn't limited to just the retailers among the list of nearly 200 LFL members. People are invited to spend money at any of the businesses, which include numerous services-oriented companies like Ashley's Wheel and Brake Service or Video Editing Services. For a full list of LFL members, visit Localfirstlexington.com/directory.

The gift card will be good at any LFL business, not just retail stores.

"We wanted to do something that would get people a little more excited about shopping locally," said Steve Baron, president of Local First Lexington and owner of CD Central. "We wanted to get it more in the forefront of people's thinking that they should explore local shops.

"We're not saying only shop local, just think first if a local place will have what you're looking for."

Baron said the program is modeled after one in Louisville that "got quite a bit of response."

After spending money at 10 member businesses, participants are asked to bring their receipts to any of the following members for verification before being entered into the drawing: World's Apart, 850 E. High St. and The Mall at Lexington Green; Lucia's World Friendly Boutique, 523 E. High St.; Savané Silver, 130 N. Broadway; South Hill Gallery, 1401 Versailles Rd.; Happy Place, 319 S. Ashland Ave.; St. John and Myers, 4379 Old Harrodsburg Rd.; Cutting Garden Floral Market, 1051 Floyd Dr.; or Failte Irish Import Shop, 113 S. Upper St.
