In 2010, Kentuckians donated more than 3,200 cellphones to HopeLine, a program run by Verizon Wireless that recycles and reuses the phones to help victims of domestic violence.
The program supplies cellphones with free airtime to victims of domestic abuse and offers grants to domestic violence agencies across the country. Phones that are donated but can't be refurbished are recycled.
In total, Verizon Wireless awarded $17,000 in cash grants to domestic violence agencies around the state in 2010. Nationally, the program collected more than 1.1 million phones, and more than $2.1 million in cash grants were awarded.
