Founder of Swope auto dealers retires

Sam Swope, 85, founder and chairman of the Sam Swope Auto Group, announced his retirement Tuesday.

Swope founded the company in Elizabethtown in January 1952. The business has grown to 24 dealerships statewide, with more than a thousand employees.

"My departure comes with a tremendous sense of satisfaction, accomplishment and especially, appreciation," Swope said in a statement.

The company also announced that Swope's daughter Patti will become chairwoman. Swope's nephew Dick Swope will continue as president and chief executive.
