Racing commission to consider race-day ban on Lasix

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission will meet Monday to consider a prohibition on the use of the anti-bleeder medication furosemide during races.

A special committee of the commission held a hearing in December on the use of furosemide, commonly known as Lasix or Salix, in horses. The committee will meet at 12:30 p.m., before the full racing commission meeting at 1:30 p.m. Both meetings will be at the Kentucky Horse Park .

Use of the medication has been under fire over the past year, but a potential ban in graded stakes races was dropped earlier this year.

The racing commission also will consider approval of a partial change in ownership of Turfway Park and a request by Kentucky Downs to add more instant racing terminals.
