The state government announced Tuesday that it has awarded a $1 million federal Community Development Block Grant to the Liberty/Casey County Economic Development Authority to help Bluegrass Shavings expand.
The company, which opened in fall 2009, buys waste logs from landowners and loggers and creates shavings for horse, poultry and cattle bedding, according to a news release.
The $1 million grant will be used to buy equipment, including grinders, conveyors and a chipper, that will then be leased to the company.
The company intends to invest $2.4 million for new buildings, stock and inventory, and it expects to create 50 full-time jobs, according to the news release.

Bluegrass Shavings' planned expansion comes a couple of years after the company suffered a fire that destroyed equipment and buildings. The company's current operations are handled by just one employee, who hauls the product, according to the state.
