Manufacturing survey suggests lower growth than a year ago

An annual survey of Kentucky manufacturers released Thursday suggests a lower growth outlook for the economic sector than in the previous year.

In the 2012 Manufacturing Wage and Benefits Survey, 52 percent of Kentucky manufacturers surveyed said they planned to hire between one and 19 workers in 2013. The 2011 survey suggested that 58 percent would make such hires, according to the survey released by the state Department of Workforce Investment and Kentucky Association of Manufacturers.

In 2012, workers at those firms averaged $47,486 in annual pay. That's down 2.3 percent from $48,609 in the 2011 survey.

The survey was taken by 184 companies this year, down from 228 companies last year.
