WKYT adding weekend morning newscasts

Beginning Saturday, WKYT will add weekend morning newscasts.

The CBS affiliate (Channel 27) announced Thursday it will air newscasts from 6-8 a.m. Saturdays and 8-9 a.m. Sundays.

It will be the only such weekend morning newscast in the Lexington market, which has seen network affiliates add a number of news shows at non-traditional time slots in recent years.

"We're one of the largest markets in the country not to have weekend morning news," said Chris Mossman, the station's incoming general manager after the retirement later this year of longtime leader Wayne Martin.

Mossman, whose previous station in North Carolina offered weekend morning news, stressed the importance of weather coverage on weekend mornings.

"It's every bit as important as it is during the weekdays," he said. "You want to know, 'What am I going to wear to the game? Is the weather worth going out?'"

Anchoring the newscasts will be Elizabeth Dorsett, who anchors the weekend evening newscasts. She will do both until December when reporter Brittany Pelletz, who filled in for Dorsett during her recent maternity leave, takes over the weekend evening anchor duties. Meteorologist Kari Hall will appear on both the morning and evening newscasts both days.

News Director Robert Thomas noted the newscast will also be different than a regular weekday morning show.

"People aren't so rushed to get out the door for work or school," he said. "It will be important we have all the overnight breaking news and weather, but we will also be looking for that newscast to ... reflect the fact that on weekends what's on people's minds is different than what it is during the week."
