Cross-country competition for the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington is setting up as a real horse race between last year's champion, William Fox-Pitt of Great Britain, and his New Zealand rival, Andrew Nicholson.

On Friday, the second day of dressage, Fox-Pitt seized the lead with his second horse, Chilli Morning, with a score of 33.3.

But Nicholson, who is also riding two horses this weekend, now sits in both second and third places, with 38.0 on Quimbo and 40.8 on Calico Joe.

The top American rider after both days of dressage is Kentuckian Alexandra Knowles of Paris, on Last Call with 43.3.

Cross-country competition starts at 10 a.m. Saturday. On Sunday, the jumping finals in Rolex Stadium begin at 1:15 p.m.
