■ The Kentucky Historical Society has been named an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. Smithsonian Affiliation provides the opportunity to develop innovative collaborations and facilitate the loan of Smithsonian artifacts and traveling exhibitions. There are now 177 Smithsonian Affiliates in 42 states, Puerto Rico and Panama.

As an affiliate, historical society may share the Smithsonian's resources with the nation and provide enhanced access to the more than 136 million objects in the Smithsonian collections, and the knowledge and experience of the scholars and experts at the Smithsonian.

■ Louisville-based Bowie Resources and Galena Private Equity Resource Fund have announced an agreement to purchase Canyon Fuel Co. from Arch Coal for $435 million in cash. The Canyon Fuel sale has been approved by the Arch board of directors and is expected to be completed in the fall.

The new company, Bowie Resource Partners, will be based in Louisville with a regional office in Grand Junction, Colo. It will have a productive capacity of 15 million to 17 million tons of thermal coal annually and employ 1,100.
