Winchester movie theater closes, to reopen under new management

Bluegrass Theatres' Movies 9 in Winchester has closed — but the movie house apparently will reopen under new management, according to an announcement on Facebook. It was unclear how long the theater would be dark.

"Due to new technology, we were unable to keep up with the demands of the film industry and install digital," the Facebook post said. "Malco Theatres has assumed the lease and will be doing renovations and installing digital."

Malco, headquartered in Memphis, has 34 theaters, including the Owensboro Theatre in Western Kentucky and theaters in Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas and Missouri. A Malco representative could not be reached immediately for comment.

Converting a theater to digital projection can cost $100,000, and many small and independent movie theaters across the country are being forced out of business by Hollywood's decision to stop releasing new movies on film.
