Kroger, Meijer see big pre-storm sales

It's an ill wind that doesn't blow somebody good, and the weekend's bad weather created a storm of shopping at Kentucky grocery stores. Before the cold hit, shoppers cleared shelves, stocking up on bread, milk, chili fixings and beer.

Neither Kroger nor Meijer would release specifics on sales.

"Stores were very busy, I can tell you that," Meijer spokesman Frank J. Guglielmi wrote in an email message.

Tim McGurk, spokesman for Kroger's Mid-South Division, said that sales Saturday rivaled the busiest shopping days before Thanksgiving and Christmas.

On Monday, Kroger's distribution center called in extra workers and truck drivers to replenish stores, particularly of basics, including soup and chili beans, that get hit hard in cold weather.

"We are in recovery mode," McGurk said. "It won't take long for the stores to bounce back."
