The Urban County Planning Commission gave the green light Thursday to a 25,000-square-foot expansion of the Kroger store on Leestown Road.
The addition will allow the store to add products and services that the existing 46,000-square-foot store does not have, Kroger officials have said. The bakery, fresh produce, meat and organic food sections will be expanded.
Construction will start next year and is expected to be completed in 2016. The store will remain open during the project, Kroger officials said Thursday.
The 13-acre Kroger property is zoned for neighborhood business. Kroger requested that it be changed to a planned shopping center zone so the store could expand. The neighborhood business zone does not allow for a store larger than the one now on the site.

Planning staff told the commission Thursday that the change to a shopping center zone was consistent with the uses of the property.
There was no opposition at Thursday's meeting. The commission's vote was unanimous after a short presentation by planning staff.
The planning commission's decision must be approved by the Urban County Council. The zoning change most likely won't come up for a vote until August or September, Kroger officials said.
Tim McGurk, a Kroger spokesman, said the Leestown Road upgrade is one of several the Cincinnati-based chain has launched in Lexington over the past year. The Richmond Road Kroger also got a face lift and expansion. Kroger is currently building a new store on Euclid Avenue that is slated to open in November. And the Tates Creek Road Kroger was expanded to 95,000 square feet last year.
"Our Chinoe Road store is completing an interior refresh now," McGurk said.
