Kroger is shifting the lineup of goods at three Marketplace stores, swapping out furniture and home goods for apparel.

Three Kroger Marketplace stores in Kentucky — Richmond Road and Beaumont Centre Circle in Lexington, and Boone Station Road in Shelbyville — have put furniture and home décor on sale for half off to make room of apparel items that will begin arriving in mid-October, according to Tim McGurk, Kroger spokesman.

The departments, which will be fully stocked by mid-November, will carry brands including Carhartt, Fila, Champion, Dickies, Signature by Levi Strauss & Co., Skechers, Jockey Activewear, Hanes Classics and Gloria Vanderbilt.

The transition might be new to Kentucky but not to Kroger.

"Kroger's Fred Meyer division, which operates largely in the Northwest, has sold apparel for decades," McGurk said. "Apparel has already replaced furniture at a number of Kroger Marketplace stores on Ohio. Customer acceptance has been great at those locations, and we certainly expect the same here."

Why move away from home goods and into clothes?

"As with so many other changes our company has made, this is simply a result of Kroger listening to feedback from our customers," McGurk said. "Both locally and nationally, our customers have told us that they would prefer apparel offerings to furniture and home décor items in our larger stores."

The Lexington and Shelbyville stores will sell some furniture and décor items on a seasonal and promotional basis, he said. There are no immediate plans to change the lineup at the Kentucky Kroger Marketplaces in Richmond and Georgetown.
