The new Kroger at 704 Euclid Avenue — which Kroger officials say is "unlike any other Kroger store in the nation" — will open Thursday at 8 a.m. with University of Kentucky head basketball coach John Calipari cutting the ribbon.
The 86,000-square-foot store on three levels will include expanded varieties of produce, meat, seafood and deli. Specialty departments will include a walk-in beer cave, a sushi bar, a Starbucks Coffee Shop, soup and salad bar, a Murray's Cheese Shop and a drive-through pharmacy.
The new store carries 130,000 items compared to 80,000 items in the previous store, which was demolished last March.
In a first for Kroger, the deli department will include food carts offering selections from local restaurants Athenian Grill and La Petite Creperie. Additionally, this store will accept the University of Kentucky Plus Account.
In addition to parking spaces in a lot in front of the store, 125 parking spaces will be available on the roof. Multiple elevators and escalators will transport customers between the shopping level and the parking deck.
The store's layout includes below-ground food preparation areas, storage, offices and employee break rooms. Also, the new store will feature custom murals created by Lexington artists and a café area with wi-fi and big screen TVs and seating for 70 indoors and 25 outdoors.
The store will be open 24 hours, seven days a week. Pharmacy hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
A full service Wine & Spirits Shoppe also opens Thursday at the corner of Euclid and Ashland avenues. It will offer 600 varieties of wine from around the world, 400 varieties of spirits and a select variety of import and craft beers. Growlers will be available for customers to fill with their favorite beer to take home. The liquor store will be open seven days a week. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday and 1-7 p.m. Sunday.
