The wait finally ended for downtown grocery shoppers: With a snip of the blue ribbon, University of Kentucky men’s basketball coach John Calipari officially opened the new Euclid Avenue Kroger at 8 a.m. Thursday.
Some shoppers had waited in line outside since 6 a.m., just to be among the first inside the totally renovated store. To keep them warm, Kroger had heaters along the sidewalk and offered free coffee.
Inside the $22 million store, now almost three times the size of the former store demolished in March, customers sampled Murray’s cheeses and got slices of cakes baked in the shape of giant cheese wheels.
The store will be open 24 hours a day, with parking on the roof as well as on the street level.
