A new corporate deal will expand the breadth and depth of radio coverage of University of Kentucky sports in Louisville, Lexington and Cincinnati.
JMI Sports, which signed a $210 million multimedia rights deal last year with UK, and iHeart Media announced Monday a 15-year deal that includes WHAS-AM and WKJK-AM in Louisville; WLAP-AM, WWTF-AM and WBUL-FM in Lexington; and WCKY-AM in Cincinnati.
Under the agreement, men's basketball and football games, pre- and post-game programs, and coaches shows will continue to air on WHAS-AM in the state's largest market and will be simulcast on both AM and FM stations in UK's home market, officials said.
Women's basketball and baseball games, and the coaches' shows, also will air in the Lexington and Louisville markets.
Specifically, the new deal will extend pregame shows for football and men's basketball from 60 minutes to 90 minutes. iHeartMedia stations also will air promotional messages for UK Athletics and the University of Kentucky throughout the year.
The UK Sports Network has more than 60 network affiliates, including two 50,000-watt AM stations. WLAP-AM in Lexington has been UK's flagship station since 2000.
"It is a priority for me that we provide our fans access to game broadcasts and programming throughout the region," UK Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart said. "This agreement assures that UK's programming will continue to air on the stations that have the largest impact and the greatest reach."
