The Children's Charity Fund of the Bluegrass kicked off its 35th anniversary Monday by disbursing more than $500,000 to local charities that benefit children.
The 2014 Classic Week, during which the charity held a golf tournament and fundraising activities, produced the money. This year's Classic Week will raise the money for next year's donations.
Throughout its history, the Children's Charity Fund has raised more than $7 million for charities and benefitted more than 300,000 children in the Bluegrass area, said Ruth Ann Childers, Children's Charity board member.
This year's Classic Week began Monday with a tee-off reception at Andover Golf & Country Club on Old Todds Road. Other activities planned for the week included Tuesday Kid's Jamboree at the Lexington Children's Theatre and Explorium for children from benefitting agencies.
The Josh Teater Junior Celebrity Tournament is Wednesday afternoon, and a cabaret will take place at the Lexington Center Bluegrass Ballroom Thursday evening. Greenbrier Golf & Country Club and Andover Golf & Country Club will host the golf tournament June 26 through 27.
