A gift guide for gamers

With the holidays upon us, it's time for a torrent of annual gift guides. So without any more fluff, here's the Manifesto's picks for the best recent console games.

Only on Xbox 360

‘Gears of War 2'

Metacritic score: 93/100

This sequel to one of the most popular multiplayer games on the Xbox 360 offers a vast array of improvements and is a serious contender for Game of the Year awards.

‘Fable II'

Metacritic score: 89/100

Game designer Peter Molyneux returns to the role-playing game genre with a sequel to the fan favorite that sees him add the features he wanted in the original.

One more: And if you haven't bought it yet, pick up Ninja Gaiden II (81/100). Tecmo's Team Ninja never disappoints in the action genre.e_SClBOnly on

PlayStation 3

‘Resistance 2'

Metacritic score: 87/100

The Chimera invade again, except this time you can battle them with as many as 59 of your friends.

Metacritic score: 95/100

Take Sackboy and Sackgirl on a fun-for-all-ages romp through an array of user-customized levels.

One more: Another pick from earlier in the year is Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (94/100).e_SClBOnly on Wii

‘Wii Music'

Metacritic score: 62/100

Yeah, it's hard to find great Wii games from this year, outside of Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii, which were released earlier in the year. Wii Music is a recent addition, but it's not really getting great reviews. Try at your own risk.

‘World of Goo'

Metacritic score: 95/100

Well, again, there's not really many great Wii-only games. Period. So this is a pick from Wii Ware, the Wii's downloadable game section. It's a puzzle game. There you go.

Four more: Just as above, get Smash Bros. (94/100) or Mario Kart Wii (82/100). Of course, the now year-old Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess (95/100) and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (90/100) are great games at better prices. e_SClBMultiplatform

‘Fallout 3'

Xbox 360, PS3, PC

Metacritic score: Range of 91-93.

Return to the famous Fallout universe in this stellar RPG created by the minds behind Oblivion.

‘Rock Band 2'

Xbox 360, PS3 (coming soon on Wii and PS2)

Metacritic score: Range of 82-92.

The originators of the band concept keep their lead over the Guitar Hero franchise, as Rock Band 2 has better downloadable content and an improved band world tour mode.

‘Dead Space'

Xbox 360, PS3, PC

Metacritic score: Range of 86-89.

Prepare to be scared stiff in this immersive and stunning horror sci-fi first-person shooter.

One more: If you don't have Grand Theft Auto IV (98/100), there's no excuse anymore. Go get felonious. Available on Xbox 360 and PS3. It hits the PC on Tuesday.
