Hiker dies in fall in Red River Gorge

A 30-year-old hiker was killed late Saturday when he fell off a ridge in the Red River Gorge near the Chimney Top Rock outlook about 11 p.m.

The Wolfe County search and rescue team said a nurse who was camping below the outlook told rescuers that the man had died.

Volunteer squads from Powell and Menifee counties helped Wolfe County searchers find the hiker's body. WKYT reported that the hiker was identified as Michael Hacker, 30, of Ohio.

It's been a busy four days for volunteer search and rescue squads in the Red River Gorge. On Friday, two boys — both younger than 10 — were found unharmed by rescue crews after they walked away from their family's camp site in the Red River Gorge on Thursday evening.
