Fayette County jail fire started in inmate's cell

An inmate started a fire in a cell at the Fayette County Detention Center Tuesday night, said Battalion Chief Marshall Griggs of the Lexington Fire Department. Firefighters were called to the jail at 7:36 p.m., but the fire was out by the time they arrived. Some papers and a mattress were burned, said Battalion Chief Brent Frizzell. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Griggs said five inmates were temporarily moved to other areas of the jail while firefighters removed smoke.
