A West Virginia inmate has been indicted in a Kentucky cold case, Kentucky State Police said Tuesday.
Shane Elkins, 36, of Menifee County was charged with murder in the Jan. 22, 1998, death of Michael Dean Bartley in Ezel in Morgan County. He was struck several times in the head and died in his yard, the Kentucky State Police Morehead post said in a written release.
Detective Donnie McGraw was investigating the cold case when he was led to Elkins, police said. A grand jury indicted Elkins, who is currently an inmate at Mount Olive Correctional Center in West Virginia, serving a sentence on other charges.
