Beth Pennington wants the deployed military men and women who receive care packages sent by Military Missions Inc. to know that "someone cares."

The organization, which Pennington founded, provides support to military personnel throughout the year. Volunteers are especially busy this time of year, packing and shipping boxes of personal-care items and holiday treats for servicemen and women.

"This year, more people know us and so we're getting more requests," she said.

Hundreds of volunteers organized donations that were received various ways, including through area drop boxes, and then packed boxes and bags of items, including cards and letters, for shipping.

Pennington said about 3,000 service people will receive items from Military Missions this holiday season. With the news of the Iraq war officially ending Thursday, there are items that will be available to send to other troops in 2012.

"We send items out every other month," said Pennington. "It's important for people to know we're not just doing this at Christmas."
