Intruder may have been shot during Laurel break-in attempt

Laurel County sheriff's deputies were looking for a man who was possibly shot while trying to break into a home Saturday night.

According to a news release from Sheriff John Root's office, London resident Jeffrey Wade Hooker spotted the man trying to break into the home of Hooker's brother, on Joe Hooker Lane off Moriah Church Road, seven miles west of London.

Hooker, who was armed with a gun, was "walking his brother's property" because his brother was out of town, the release said. While there, he allegedly saw a man he didn't know open a screen door and "get ready to kick the door in."

Hooker told deputies he attempted to confront the man. The man ran around the outside of the home, and when Hooker caught up to him, the man pointed a gun at Hooker, the release said.

"Mr. Hooker fired one round from his gun toward the suspect's foot to try and wound him," the release said.

The man then ran over a hill into the woods. Hooker located drops of blood leading away from the scene.

Authorities searched the woods, but no suspect had been identified or located Sunday evening, the release said.
