Herald-Leader Staff Report

April 30, 2012 06:43 PM

Children were evacuated from a day-care center on Monday, after a small fire on the roof of Eastland Shopping Center.

The fire, which was reported at 1:45 p.m., started when an electrical transformer that powers neon signs ignited the wood in a parapet wall, fire officials said.

The fire started above the offices of B.C. Wood Cos., which operates the shopping center.

Children from Kidz Konnection Child Care, which is near the office, were taken to a bank across the street while firefighters put out the blaze.

This President’s Day features much colder air and a few snowflakes dancing about the sky. This pattern is not going to be the dominant one of the week as rounds of heavy rain return. This will cause the flood risk to increase in the coming days.
