Man pleads guilty to assault in stabbing of Fayette health department dentist

Daniel B. Hale pleaded guilty Friday to stabbing a Lexington-Fayette County Health Department dentist last December, according to Commonwealth's Attorney Ray Larson.

Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 14 in Fayette Circuit Court.

Larson said his office has recommended a sentence of 17 years on the first-degree assault charge.

Hale would have to serve more than 14 years of the sentence if the court accepts that recommendation.

Dentist Candice Flener suffered deep slash wounds to her face in the attack on the morning of Dec. 20. It occurred during a theft in the health department parking lot at Loudon Avenue and Newtown Pike as health department employees were reporting to work.

Police arrested Hale that afternoon.

Hale's attorney has asked that he receive an evaluation at the Kentucky Correctional Psychiatric Center.
