Police say bank employees saw relative, not man who escaped from jail officers

Police confirmed late Monday that a man who went to Cumberland Valley National Bank in Lexington Monday was not the man who escaped from jail officials last week.

Earlier Monday, police said bank employees reported seeing Mustafa Qasem, 21, of Lexington. Shortly after the man's appearance at the bank on Richmond Road, employees notified police who issued "an attempt to locate" bulletin on Qasem, Lexington police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said.

But Roberts said "we made contact with the man who was at the bank today ... and determined that that man was not Mustafa Qasem.''

The man who went to the bank was one of Qasem's relatives, Roberts said.

Investigators have said Qasem escaped last Wednesday from two Fayette County Detention corrections officers who were driving him to jail. Qasem managed to get one hand out of his handcuffs and then he opened the door when the vehicle stopped.
