Crab Orchard man, granddaughter wounded in early-morning shooting

Police are trying piece together what happened early Thursday morning when a Crab Orchard man and his teenage granddaughter were shot at the man's home, Kentucky State Trooper Paul Blanton said.

Blanton said police went to a home on Simpson Road in Lincoln County just after 6 a.m. Thursday in response to a domestic violence report involving Danny Brummett and his wife, who was unharmed and whose name was not released. At the home, police found that Brummett's granddaughter, Monique Brummett, 18, had been shot in the upper leg. Brummett, 66, had an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Blanton said.

The two were taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital in Lexington, where Monique Brummett was being released Thursday morning, hospital spokeswoman Julie Phillips said. There was no patient identified as Danny Brummett in hospital records, Phillips said.

No charges had been filed as of 8:45 a.m., Blanton said.
