Large fire outside former Clark Co. factory causes damage

A large fire Friday night near Interstate 64 caused damage at a former factory, according to the Clark County Fire Department.

Firefighter Michael Kelso said the department responded to an outside fire at the Rockwell International Corp. plant on 555 Rockwell Road at 10:22 p.m. Motorists on the interstate reported the fire, he said. Winchester and Lexington fire departments helped to extinguish the fire.

The fire damaged several pallets of plastic drain tiles and air conditioners, Kelso said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Rockwell opened in 1979 as a manufacturer of automotive parts. The plant was Clark County's biggest employer with nearly 1,500 employees. The 575,000-square-foot factory closed in 1992.

Kelso said he was unsure what the plant is being used for, but there are a few independent factories inside.
