A Harlan County man was killed early Friday morning when the car he was riding in crashed into the back of a dump truck, Kentucky State Police said.

The wreck occurred shortly before 6 a.m. Friday on U.S. 119 in the Rosspoint community of Harlan County, troopers said.

According to a preliminary investigation, William Caldwell, 60, of Bledsoe was driving north in the right lane of U.S. 119 when a 2007 Chevrolet Impala crashed into the rear of his 1978 Mack dump truck.

A passenger in the Chevy, Donald P. Tarbell, 41, of the Coxton Community in Harlan County, died at the scene, police said.

The Impala's driver, Tracey Rapier, 40, of Evarts, was treated at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in Harlan.

Neither Rapier nor Tarvell were wearing seat belts, state police said.
