Astronomer focuses on Mars

The following events will be held at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond:

■ Astronomer Jim Bell will be featured at the next Chautauqua Lecture Series, ”Space, Place and Life,“ at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Student Services Building's O'Donnell Hall. Bell, associate professor of astronomy at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., will present ”Postcards From Mars and the Habitability of the Red Planet.“ Bell is the lead scientist on the Pancam color camera team for the NASA Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity.

■ The Healthy You at EKU! Program and Student Affairs will sponsor EKU's annual campuswide health fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Powell Building Lobby. Several screening booths will be available to students, faculty and staff at no charge and without an appointment. The fair will feature more than 50 vendor booths.

Gallery Hop returns to downtown Friday

Richmond's First Friday Gallery Hop will be 5 to 9 p.m. Friday in downtown Richmond. The Pocket Gallery, 209 St George Street, will offer free portrait sittings to the first 20 people who sign up. Gourdsmith artist Donna Smith will be at Jana Kappeler's Studio, 106 South Third Street. The Chestnut Tree Gallery, 102 East Main Street, will feature the work of student potters from the Eastern Kentucky University ceramics department and potters Henrietta and Jeff Scott and Donna Perry in the exhibit Pots o' Gold. The EKU student potters will demonstrate their skills at Studio Down Under, 116 South First Street. Maps of all the participating studios, galleries and businesses are available at all locations.
