The City of Winchester will celebrate Armed Forces Day with a ceremony beginning 9:30 a.m. Saturday on the Courthouse Lawn. The guest speaker will be Col. Carlos Glover of the U.S. Army.

The community's top volunteers were honored at the Central Kentucky Volunteer Awards recognition breakfast on April 29. The Central Kentucky Volunteer Awards have honored individuals, groups and organizations in the Bluegrass for 23 years. Two Clark County residents were nominated for awards.
Casey Shields was nominated for the Youth Service Award. She has served Eastern State Hospital through more than 360 volunteer hours since May 2007. Shields interacts with patients in the greenhouse and assists with classes.
Daniel Castle also was nominated for the Individual Service Award. Castle has gone above and beyond his duties as fire chief for Winchester to serve in a volunteer role as president of the Bluegrass Emergency Response Team. He also volunteers with Kiwanis Club, United Way, Junior Achievement and other organizations.
Horse shows set
Two horse shows will take place this weekend at the Clark County Fairgrounds, 4980 Ironworks Road.
■ The Charity Horse Show takes place at 5 p.m. Saturday. Health certificates and negative Coggins are required on all horses. Contact Donnie Woosley at (859) 745-4913 or Jim Woosley at (859) 744-6163.
■ The Clark County Saddle Club Fun and Game Show will begin 1 p.m. Sunday, rain or shine. Events include lead line, stick horse race, ride a buck, speed barrel and more. Movies on Main
The Leeds Center for the Arts, 37 North Main Street, will present National Velvet starring Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey Rooney at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday as part of its Movies on Main series. Tickets are $3 for adults and $1 for children.
