EKU to host Paralympic program
About 100 local business professionals will compete in wheelchair basketball, wheelchair sprints and sitting volleyball from 9:15 and 11:30 a.m. and 2:15 to 4:30 p.m. today at Eastern Kentucky University's Alumni Coliseum. The able-bodied professionals from EKU and the community will participate as part of The Hartford's Achieve Without Limits campaign. U.S. Paralympic wheelchair basketball player Jeremy "Opie" Lade will speak at the training program.
Lade, who was injured in a car accident in 1989, has led Team USA to multiple international victories in wheelchair basketball. He earned a bronze medal at the Wheelchair Basketball World Championships in Birmingham, England, in 2010 and was a member of the U.S. Paralympic Wheelchair Basketball team that competed at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games.
