Lex-Care: Money need to buy device for mother's medical care

Gabriel Brown, a social worker at the Jessie Clark Middle School Youth Service Center, submitted this case to Lex-Care. He is working with a family who needs $500 dollars to purchase a device to treat the mother's illness.

The mother is a diabetic and over the past few years has also had colon cancer and triple bypass surgery. She is medically disabled.

She is insulin dependent and has seizures because of her low blood sugar. Her medical team recommends that she use a device that sets off an alarm when her blood sugar drops below a certain level so treatment can be delivered before the seizure occurs. Due to the cost of out-of-pocket prescriptions, the family is unable to afford this one-time expense that is not covered by insurance.

The family's income is from the husband's earnings and Social Security Disability benefits.
