Lex-Care: Families hit by layoff, injury need help with rent

Two requests for assistance to pay rent were received at Lex-Care last week.

Raine Engle, a social worker at Dixie Family Resource Center, is counseling the husband of a family of five. He needs $750 to pay the family's rent and electric bill.

The husband was a factory worker until he was laid off.

The family has been living on the wife's earnings, supplemented by their savings and his unemployment benefits, which have expired.

The family has signed up for KU's budget plan and the older two children plan to get summer jobs to help.

At this time, the only income is the wife's earnings. Once the husband returns to work, the family will be able to manage.

Shannon Gordon, a social worker at the Lexington Senior Citizen Center, is working with a married couple who need $750 to pay their rent.

The husband worked as a mason and did other odd jobs until he was injured. He is now unable to work.

He receives Social Security, but fell behind on his bills while waiting for approval of his SS application. Once the bills are paid the couple will again be financially stable.
