Lex-Care: Elderly woman needs wheelchair carrier

The need for durable medical equipment and for help paying an electricity bill are behind requests received at Lex-Care last week.

Ann Wilkinson, a social worker at Lifeline Home Health, has a patient who needs $250 to buy a carrier for her electric wheelchair. The elderly disabled patient is under a doctor's care. She has a permanent tracheotomy because of cancer of the larynx. She uses a wheelchair because she must have a six-liter container of oxygen with her constantly. Her occupational therapist found a supplier who agreed to a one-time payment that the patient could afford, so the patient can be transported safely.

Kathy Doyle, a case manager with the Bluegrass Rape Crisis Center, is counseling a divorced woman who needs $503 to pay her electric bill. The woman is disabled because of numerous medical problems including fibromyalgia, degenerative disc disease and sleep apnea. She had been getting assistance from the Community Action program, but it has closed. Once this debt is paid, she will be able to manage on her Social Security disability benefits.
