Jessamine County: Two grants for environmental aids

The Jessamine County Fiscal Court has received two grants totaling $185,905.97 from the Kentucky Division of Waste Management to improve local environmental programs.

The first grant, $163,101.46, will be used to buy four recycling trailers. Two will be used to recycle cardboard at existing recycling drop-off sites. The remaining two trailers will be used by Thompson Hood Veterans Center to deliver recycling materials to the Jessamine Recycling Center. Also, a new horizontal cardboard baler will replace an aging vertical cardboard baler that had to be loaded by hand.

The second grant, $22,804.50, will be used to host a household hazardous-waste collection event where people may bring items that, if disposed of improperly, can cause damage to the environment.

Camp Nelson Honor Guard seeks support

The Camp Nelson Honor Guard, which provides enhanced military funeral rites for veterans at the Camp Nelson National Cemetery, is seeking support in the form of volunteers or monetary donations. The non-profit group participates in nearly 300 services each year. Some services include a horse-drawn caisson, one of only three in the country that are regularly used during military funerals.
