32 women want to be Miss Kentucky 2011

Thirty-two contestants from scholarship pageants throughout the state are vying this week to become Miss Kentucky 2011.

The pageant will be at the University of Kentucky Singletary Center for the Arts. Preliminary competitions will be at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday. The finals will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday, culminating with the crowning of the new Miss Kentucky.

The winner will succeed Djuan Trent, who placed in the top 10 at the Miss America Pageant earlier this year.

Tickets to the three nights of competition are available by calling the Singletary Center box office at (859) 257-4929. Tickets are $25 each night of the preliminaries and $50 for the finals.

More than $38,000 in cash scholarships will be awarded to contestants in addition to numerous prizes and in-kind scholarships to colleges and universities. The winner will represent Kentucky in the Miss America Pageant in January in Las Vegas at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. The pageant will be telecast live on ABC.

Again this year, one of the semifinalists for Miss Kentucky will be determined by the public, rather than the panel of judges. Each vote costs $1 at, payable by credit card or PayPal. There is no limit to the number of votes a person may cast.

Voting ends at 9 p.m. Friday, and

all proceeds from the voting will benefit the Miss Kentucky Scholarship Organization, a non-profit scholarship program.

The contestant with the most votes will be named "Kentucky's Choice" and will become one of the 11 semifinalists at the Miss Kentucky Pageant.
