Lex-Care: Hospice patient needs rent help

The request for assistance from Lex-Care this week came from Ken Wilson, a social worker at Hospice of the Bluegrass. His client is an elderly woman who needs $475 to pay her rent. She is a hospice patient who is bed-bound and requires full assistance with hygiene and 24/7 care. Her life expectancy is short. Her husband, who was her sole caregiver, died in October. Her family members are now providing care and have made funeral arrangements.

The person holding her husband's power of attorney found that her husband had a number of bills, which will include the cost of the burial. At this time her only income is her Social Security benefit. This benefit will be increased when she is established as a widow.
