Auto repair and rent assistance are the reasons for the two requests received at Lex-Care this week.
Martha Keys, a social worker at St. Joseph Cancer Center/Resource Services, is helping a married couple who needs $580 to pay their rent. The wife has a history of throat cancer and has completed a course of treatment that included a tracheotomy and a prosthesis so her voice can be heard.
The out-of-pocket expenses incurred during this time caused the couple to fall behind on their rent.
Both she and her husband receive Social Security benefits and the husband has applied for Veteran Administration benefits. When the application is approved, the couple will be able to manage.

Single mother of four needs help in repairing car
Beth Myers, a case manager at Mary Todd Family Resource Center, submitted the case of a single mother of four whose car broke down on the first day of school. The estimate for the cost of repairs is between $500 and $1,000.
The client is a stay-at-home mother who is typically able to pay her monthly expenses. Her present income is from child support the children receive and food stamps.
When this problem is resolved, she will be able to manage.
