Graduations, promotions, deployments and homecomings of Central Kentuckians in all branches of the United States military.


Army Master Sgt. Joseph D. Bowlds has been decorated with the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. The medal is awarded to individuals for non-combat meritorious achievement or service that is incontestably exceptional and of a magnitude that places them above their peers.

Bowlds is a concert band woodwind group leader assigned to the United States Army Field Band at Fort George G. Meade, Md. He has served in the military for 15 years.

He is the son of Ruth Johnson of Lexington.


■ Sgt. Dennis Cates Jr. has completed his Sapper Leader's Course at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He graduated March 15 and received his Sapper Tab.

Sgt. Cates is the son of Candice McIntosh of Campton and the late Dennis Cates of Lee City, Ky.

■ Air Force Airman Aaron J. Griffin has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Griffin is the son of Carol Amos and grandson of Connie Taylor, both of Lexington. He is a 2012 graduate of Tates Creek High School.

The following have graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.:

Army Pvt. Richard A. Ratliff Jr. is the son of Brenda and Richard Ratliff Sr. of Clintonville, Wis., and the nephew of Margaret Mitchell of Lexington.

Army National Guard Pfc. Brandon T. Plotts is the son of Christopher and Dixie Campbell of Nicholasville. He is a 2009 graduate of West Jessamine High School.

Army National Guard Pvt. Jacqueline B. Cromer is the sister of Gwendolyn Cromer of Berea. She is a 2012 graduate of Estill County High School, Irvine.
