Jessamine County Director of Public Services Mike Cassidy has been appointed to the Kentucky Animal Control Advisory Board by Gov. Steve Beshear.
The duties include making recommendations to the commissioner of the Department of Agriculture relating to animal control issues, evaluating applications for disbursement of animal care and control funds, establishing shelter standards, and creating training programs.
The Board was established in 1998 by an act of the General Assembly. Board members are appointed by the governor to four-year terms and are nominated by the following groups: Kentucky Association of Counties, Kentucky Animal Control Association, Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association, Kentucky Farm Bureau, Kentucky Houndsmen Association, and Kentucky League of Cities.
Cassidy began his career with the Jessamine County Fiscal Court as an animal control officer in January 2000. In 2004, he was promoted to supervisor of animal control officers. From 2005 to 2006 he served as the vice president of the Kentucky Animal Care and Control and in 2007 he was elected president of the group. From 2008-2011, Cassidy served as Jessamine County director of environmental services. In 2012, the Fiscal Court took over the operations of the Jessamine County Animal Shelter and merged Cassidy's responsibilities as director of environmental services with the job duties of director of animal care and control, creating a new position as director of Jessamine County Public Services.
