Clark County: Man-Made Mayhem July 19; Back-to-School Readifest donations being accepted

Man-Made Mayhem, Understanding the Synthetic Drug, will be 12:30-2:30 p.m. July 19 at the Clark County Public Library, 370 South Burns Avenue.

The program will teach participants about different types of synthetic drugs, the medical consequences of synthetic drug use, current federal legislation concerning synthetic drugs, and the relationship between drug use and high-risk teenage behavior and teenage depression and suicide.

Presenter Jessica Miller is the prevention specialist at Bluegrass.org and is a founding member of the Anderson County Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention Board.

Brown bag lunches and refreshments will be provided for all participants. To register, call or text Janna Smith at (859) 749-1577 or email your information to jannasmith@clarkcountyasap.org.

School supplies needed for Readifest

Donations are being accepted for the 16th Annual Back-to-School Readifest scheduled for 6-7:30 p.m. Aug. 1.

The goal of this year's event is to help 500 children in the Clark County Public Schools with backpacks and school supplies for the 2013-14 school year. Items needed include: mesh backpacks, crayons, glue sticks, pencils, colored pencils, two-pocket folders, graph paper and wide-ruled loose-leaf paper and spiral notebooks.

Contact Eva Miller with donations by July 12 at (859) 744-8433 or eva.miller@clark.kyschools.us. Items are needed by July 26 and can be dropped off at the Youth Services Center at Conkwright Middle School, 360 Mount Sterling Road.

Parks and Rec offerings

Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation will offer the following:

■ Summer swim lessons: July 9-Aug 1. Lessons on Tuesdays and Thursdays for four weeks. The cost is $40. All lessons are 30 minutes. Call (859) 744-9554, email wccpr.aquatics@gmail.com, or visit the College Park front desk for more information.

Parent/Child: 10 a.m. or 5 p.m.

Level 1: 10:30 a.m. (all ages) or 5:30 p.m. (3-5 years old) or 6 p.m. (6 and up)

Level 2: 9:30 a.m. or 6 p.m.

Level 3: 6:30 p.m.

Level 4/5: 7 p.m.

■ Tennis Session II: July 9-25, 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesdays/Thursdays, $40 per child, elementary-middle school ages accepted. Must have racket.

■ Kite Flying Day at College Park is Saturday. Kite building begins at 10 a.m., kite flying begins at 11:30 a.m. Cost is $8.
