Fayette County: Volunteers needed for Titanic exhibit

Volunteers who want to help guide visitors through Titanic's voyage during Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition will need to attend the first of a two-part training series at the Lexington Center Museum and Gallery, on the second floor of Lexington Center, at 10 a.m. Aug. 14 or 6 p.m. Aug. 15.

Volunteers are needed in four-hour shifts seven days a week for the exhibit, which runs Oct. 5 through Jan. 26.

The second session, which is exhibition specific, is scheduled for 2 p.m. Oct. 2 and 3.

Interested volunteers should email their name, phone number and August training date to kgreathouse @lexingtoncenter.com.

Registration underway for Midsummer Night's Run

In-person registration for the 2013 A Midsummer Night's Run scheduled for Aug. 10 in downtown Lexington is underway at John's Run/Walk Shop, 317 South Ashland Avenue.

Registration at John's will extend daily through the end of business on Aug. 9. In-person registration the day of the race will begin at 2 p.m. on Mill Street between Short and Vine streets.

Online registration, available at BaptistHealthLexington.com, will continue until midnight Aug. 9.

Events will begin with the One-Mile Fun Walk/Run at 6 p.m., followed at 6:35 p.m. by The Fastest Kid in Town, a series of sprints for children ages 1 through 12. The main event, the 5K Race, will get underway at 8:30 p.m.

The 11th Annual Lexington Area Minority Business Expo will be Aug. 1-2 at the Lexington Convention Center. The event offers women and minority business owners a chance to exhibit goods and services, to network and to hear speakers discuss their paths to success.

The event kicks off at 4 p.m. Aug. 1 with a One on One Opportunity Exchange and a public reception and trade show. The expo will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 2. All events are at the Lexington Convention Center.

This year's luncheon speaker is entrepreneur and author Farrah Gray. Raised on Chicago's south side, he became a millionaire at age 14.

The morning speaker for the Expo will be Charla Young, a former Lexington TV anchor who now owns her own marketing business in Louisville and hosts her own talk show.

Class offered to help people quit smoking

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department is offering a class for people who want to quit smoking. The 12-week class using the Cooper-Clayton Method to Stop Smoking will meet from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursdays beginning Aug. 22 through Nov. 14 at Sullivan University, 2355 Harrodsburg Road. The cost of the class is $100. Participants will receive nicotine replacement therapy products, such as nicotine gum, patches and lozenges, for 10 weeks of the program. Call (859) 288-2457.

Saloon, artwork to aid Kentucky Theatre

Nick Ryan's Saloon, 157 Jefferson Street, will donate 20 percent of Monday's lunch and dinner proceeds to The Friends of the Kentucky Theatre campaign.

In addition, artwork created by five local artists will be on display and available for purchase. A "Seat In" reception will be held at the restaurant that same day from 4 to 6 p.m. Cost is $25, and includes one drink, appetizers and the opportunity to meet the artists and purchase the artwork. Twenty percent of all arts sales will be donated to the campaign to help cover the cost of new seats for the theater.

Local artists participating are Ann Nave Bass, Sue Wilmes, Norene Mara, Deborah Westerfield and Marcia Cone. Reservations are recommended for dinner by calling Nick Ryan's at (859) 233-7900.

The mission of the Friends is to preserve, renovate and enhance the 90-year-old Kentucky Theatre and create a fund for its continued maintenance. Donations can be made online at Kentuckytheatrefriends.org.
