Franklin County: Frankfort Dancing with the Stars fundraiser Aug. 17

The Kentucky Genealogical Society's 38th annual seminar on Saturday at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in Frankfort will feature certified genealogist J. Mark Lowe, a specialist in Kentucky and Tennessee family-history research.

Lowe will discuss four topics: sharpening research skills, plotting new strategies, tracing landless ancestors, and learning about ancestors through burial customs and cemetery stories.

The seminar will be from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. The registration fee is $50 for society members, $60 for non-members. Seminar details and a registration form are online at Kentuckygenealogicalsociety.org.

'Frankfort Dancing With the Stars' to benefit children

The second annual "Frankfort Dancing With the Stars" will be Aug. 17 at the Frankfort Convention Center. The event is a fundraiser to benefit two Kentucky-based nonprofit organizations whose founders are Frankfort natives: Hope for Tomorrow Children's Home, a ministry of Adopt!inc, and Sweet Blessings, an organization that creates specialty birthday cakes for Kentucky children ages 5 to 14 who are facing a life-threatening illness or poverty.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and the competition begins at 7:30 p.m. General admission is $20. VIP tickets are $100 and include a cocktail party at 5:15 p.m., a dance lesson, dinner and priority seating next to the dance floor.

The event will feature 10 dancing duos made up of professional dancers from Capital City Dance Studio and local celebrities from Frankfort. At the show and online prior to the event, people can vote for their favorite dancing star in the "People's Choice" category. Each dollar donated earns one point for the star. The award will be presented to the person who generates the most votes.
